The Best Ways To Minimize
Household Dangers And
Keep Safe Parrots

parrot danger

You want to make sure that your home provides surroundings that are conducive to keeping safe parrots.

Parrots have exceptionally inquisitive minds and highly developed intellects, making them prime candidates for “sniffing out trouble” in all its forms!

The following list includes most of the typical household dangers to be aware of if you are the owner of one of these most curious of birds.

1.  Household Plants:  You will want to be sure to research and consult with your veterinarian about what types of plants can be toxic to parrots. Your parrot will absolutely be attracted to greenery.

2.  Hot Appliances and Overheated Non-Stick Pans:  When cooking (and don’t forget ironing), your parrot will be safest inside its cage. This way he can’t be burned by stepping onto a hot stove or other hot appliance.

Over heated non-stick  substances are never good for pet parrots either. Birds are ultra sensitive to gasses given off by overheated non-stick coatings.

Self cleaning ovens also fall into this category. Make sure to have your parrot outside or in a well ventilated room far from any of these activities.

They are also affected by waffle irons, bread machines, irons, ironing covers, space heaters and blow driers.

3.  Electrical Cords and Outlets:  Unfortunately you are going to have to make sure that your home is “parrot-proofed”, which amounts to the same thing as being “child-proofed” when it comes to electrical cords and outlets. A little prevention will go a long way towards keeping your bird safe!

4.  Poisoning:  There are many toxins in the home besides house plants and non stick cookware. These can include, but are not limited to,  ammonia, bleach, cleansers, soaps, detergents, nail polish remover, perfumes and heavy metals. Be careful that your parrot does not get the opportunity to either ingest or inhale any of them.

5.  Soft Toys:  Stuffed toys, such as those you might buy for children or dogs, are a hazard for your parrot. They can easily tear them apart and accidently swallow or choke on the stuffing.

6.  Open Containers of Water:  These can include dishpans, toilets, bathtubs and buckets of water for cleaning. Your curious parrot can easily fall into one of these and drown.

7.  Other Animals:  If you have other pets don’t leave them with your parrot in an unsupervised situation. Parrots are generally considered prey and many other household pets are considered predators. You should observe extreme caution even when the animals are supervised.

8.  Ceiling Fans:  Another dangerous appliance for birds is a ceiling fan. Many birds have been killed or badly injured by flying into the turning blades of ceiling fans.

9.  Unhealthy Diet:  Even though this hazard is a bit different it is nonetheless real. Make sure not to feed your pet parrot unhealthy treats, a high salt or high sugar diet.

Do your research and find out what a healthy parrot diet is. It does not consist mainly of seeds as many people think. A high quality, commercial pelleted food should be the basis for a healthy diet.

10.  Poor Air Quality:  Parrots have sensitive respiratory systems. Keep them away from aerosols and other types of sprays. Do not smoke or burn things around them. If any of these things enter their environment move them to another location immediately.

As you can see, you need to be alert to what is going on in the immediate environment so that you can raise safe parrots.
