Fun And Easy Parrots Tricks

For many people part of the fun of owning a parrot is teaching it to do parrots tricks. Their keen intelligence and enjoyment of interaction often make this a very rewarding pursuit.

It’s not all fun and games, however, training your parrot will make him more attentive, better behaved, more sociable and may even correct some behavior problems!

For instance, teaching a parrot to talk can help solve the problem of persistent screeching. Sometimes parrots will resort to loud screeching to get attention. When your parrot talks rather than screeching you will tend to enjoy it’s vocalizations more.

To teach your parrot to talk you need to start with one simple word of one or two syllables. Repeat the word slowly to your parrot several times until your parrot makes a response. When it responds reward it with a treat. The word may not come out clearly the first time or two but with repitition it will sound better and better!

You don’t even really need formal trining sessions. If, as you walk by your bird’s cage, you stop briefly and speak the word a time or two on a regular basis your it will still learn to repeat what you say. You may want to take care what you say around your parrot…you may be surprised that they have learned something you might have preferred that they didn’t!

Another easy trick to teach your bird is to “step up”. This trick can also be useful for catching or getting your bird to come to you. All you do is ask your parrot to step onto the object in front of it. You can start by placing your finger in front of them and saying “step up”. If they don’t understand you can touch their chest, just above their leg with the side of your finger.

You can also use food again as a reward or to invite your parrot to move forward. If you have one of the larger species of parrots you can use your forearm rather than your finger.

One more trick that is fun and easy to teach is how to turn around. Once you have your parrot standing on a perch offer it a treat. As it reaches for the treat move your hand slowly around behind the bird and the bird will turn it’s head to follow the food. You may have to coax a bit or your parrot may turn around on it’s perch right away. When it does you can offer the reward.

When teaching your parrot tricks you need to keep the training sessions short. You don’t want to overdo things and make it a negative experience. You always want to end the session on a good note.

Training in a quiet room with minimal distractions is ideal and increases your chances for success. Make sure the room is well lit and is comfortable for both you and your parrot.

Last but not least, you need to have a calm and patient demeanor and be stress free in order to teach your bird to do parrots tricks.
